There is currently no single treatment that cures cerebral palsy. However, appropriate treatment and rehabilitation can help improve mobility, communication, independence and quality of life.
Treatment may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, medicines for muscle stiffness or associated symptoms, orthotic devices, rehabilitation programs and, when appropriate, orthopedic or neurosurgical procedures. Treatment is individualized according to the patient’s condition.
India has specialized hospitals and rehabilitation centers offering multidisciplinary care, including physical medicine and rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, orthotics and selected surgical procedures.
In selected cases, surgery may be considered to address problems such as severe contractures, deformities, abnormal muscle tone or orthopedic complications. Surgery is not suitable for every patient and requires an individual assessment by specialists.
Treatment and rehabilitation can begin as early as appropriate after developmental concerns are identified. Early assessment and intervention can help children access therapies and support sooner.
A multidisciplinary team may include a pediatric neurologist or neurologist, rehabilitation medicine specialist, orthopedic surgeon, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, orthotist and other healthcare professionals depending on the patient’s needs
The duration varies according to the patient’s age, type and severity of CP, functional goals and response to rehabilitation. Some patients require long-term or ongoing therapy, while others may need periodic intensive rehabilitation programs.
