Early Signs and Symptoms of Dementia
Dementia symptoms vary between individuals. Early signs may be mild and are sometimes mistaken for ordinary ageing.
Common symptoms include:
- Frequently forgetting recent conversations or events
- Repeating the same questions
- Difficulty remembering familiar names or words
- Becoming confused about dates, time or location
- Difficulty planning or solving problems
- Problems managing money or medicines
- Difficulty completing familiar daily activities
- Losing objects or placing them in unusual locations
- Poor judgement or unsafe decision-making
- Changes in mood, behaviour or personality
- Withdrawal from family or social activities
- Difficulty speaking, reading or writing
- Problems recognising familiar people
- Changes in walking, coordination or balance
- Sleep disturbances, agitation or hallucinations
Occasional forgetfulness does not always indicate dementia. Medical assessment is recommended when cognitive or behavioural changes begin affecting daily activities, safety or independence.
